ECOWAS Warns UN of Escalating Terrorism Threat in West Africa

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has alerted the United Nations Security Council about the rising terrorism threat in West Africa and the Sahel region, emphasizing the severe existential risk it presents to the area. ECOWAS called for intensified efforts to combat terrorism, including economic warfare to disrupt terrorist supply chains and critical infrastructure.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, expressed worries over the deteriorating humanitarian and security conditions in the Sahel. Julius Maada Bio, the President of Sierra Leone and current ECOWAS Chairman, emphasized the global nature of the terrorism problem, necessitating collective action to address extremist violence in West Africa.
