Nigerian Businesses Struggle as Calls Go Unanswered

In Nigeria, businesses are experiencing significant challenges as more than 50% of calls from unknown numbers are flagged as spam or fraud, the highest rate in Africa. This has led to a widespread habit among consumers of ignoring calls from unknown numbers, which directly impacts businesses that rely on phone communication.

For small businesses, this results in lost deals as potential customers do not recognize the caller and assume it is a scam. In logistics, delivery attempts fail when riders call to confirm addresses, leading to increased costs.

Telecom operators are also affected, as their outbound calls are treated with the same suspicion as those from other businesses. Banks, which have long advised customers never to share personal details over the phone, now find their legitimate calls met with distrust.

This situation creates a paradox where the institutions most reliant on phone communication are the least able to effectively use it, leading to a broader crisis in customer trust and business operations.
