The Headies Defends Gospel Music Recognition Amid Criticism

The Headies addressed criticism regarding the recognition of gospel and faith-based music in a statement released on Instagram on August 30, following an open letter from gospel artist Gaise Baba on August 28. Gaise Baba urged The Headies to reconsider how faith-based music is acknowledged, suggesting that gospel artists should compete in general categories if their music meets the standards.

The Headies responded by stating that gospel artists have not been excluded from major categories, citing past winners such as Lara George, Kefee, Timi Dakolo, and Nikki Laoye. They noted that the Best Inspirational Single category, introduced at the 15th Headies in 2022, was created to provide more opportunities for gospel and inspirational artists, with past winners including Kcee, Okwesili Eze Group, Neon Adejo, and Mercy Chinwo.

For the 18th edition, nominees include Sunmisola Agbebi, Lawrence Oyor, Sinach, EmmaOMG, Gaise Baba, and Mercy Chinwo.
