Osun State Faces Local Government Crisis Amid Political Tensions

The local government crisis in Osun State has escalated, significantly affecting workers and pensioners due to withheld statutory allocations amounting to N130 billion for the 30 local government areas. This situation has worsened poverty and neglect among citizens.

The crisis originated from the dissolution of local government structures by Governor Ademola Adeleke, who inherited the situation from his predecessor, Adegboyega Oyetola. Following a controversial local council election, which was nullified by a federal high court in Osogbo, Adeleke appointed a caretaker committee to manage the councils.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has challenged this decision, leading to further political tension. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed local government workers to withdraw services for safety reasons, resulting in idle council secretariats.

The Supreme Court ruled against the seizure of local government funds, emphasizing financial autonomy, yet the crisis persists, impacting basic services and creating a climate of fear and violence.
