Nigerian football, historically a significant unifying factor, is currently facing severe challenges, with the House of Football in Nigeria described as collapsing and chaotic. The nation has a rich football legacy, marked by achievements such as the Green Eagles' victory in the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, the Golden Eaglets' triumph in the U17 Championship in China, and the Super Falcons' record of winning the Women African Cup of Nations 10 times out of 15.

Female football gained traction in Nigeria with the establishment of clubs in the late 1970s and the Super Falcons' participation in the first FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1991.
