NFF Board Resigns After Super Falcons' World Cup Failure

On Thursday, the Board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), under the leadership of Ibrahim Gusau, resigned amid intense pressure from stakeholders dissatisfied with the Super Falcons’ inability to defend their title at the 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco. This failure also resulted in Nigeria missing the 2027 Women’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The Super Falcons, nine-time African champions, were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Cameroon and subsequently lost a playoff match to South Africa. This disappointing performance followed the Super Eagles’ second consecutive failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, further aggravating frustrations among Nigerian football fans.

Stakeholders are demanding a complete overhaul of the NFF, which has faced numerous crises since its inception in 1960. The Gusau-led board is the 35th in Nigerian football history and has been criticized for the decline in the nation’s football performance, despite a period of relative stability.
