Nigeria's Airports Transform Under FAAN's Olubunmi Kuku

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, along with other Nigerian international airports, is experiencing a transformation under the leadership of Olubunmi Kuku, the first female managing director and chief executive officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). For years, these airports were characterized by poor infrastructure, chaotic terminal conditions, and safety concerns.

However, guided by the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, FAAN has initiated a comprehensive restructuring plan that prioritizes safety-critical engineering and operational modernization. A significant milestone was the rehabilitation of Runway 18R/36L and Taxiway B at MMIA, which restored essential operational capabilities.

Nationwide infrastructure upgrades have also been implemented, including airfield lighting improvements and runway assessments at regional airports such as Enugu, Ilorin, Minna, Kano, Katsina, Jos, and Yola. This initiative addresses a legacy infrastructure deficit estimated at N580 billion, ensuring compliance with global Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and enhancing the overall passenger experience.
