FAAN's Olubunmi Kuku Oversees MMIA's Major Upgrades

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos is currently undergoing a major infrastructural transformation, significantly altering its appearance and functionality. The remodeling program, which is still in progress, aims to create a state-of-the-art facility comparable to major international airports.
Terminal 1, which was closed for a complete overhaul starting in March 2026 after a fire incident in February, is being stripped down to its concrete frame for a comprehensive rebuild, including new smart Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems and advanced baggage handling. During this closure, operations have moved to a temporary departure hall with 20 check-in counters.
Additionally, Terminal 2 is being redesigned and expanded, with plans for a connecting skywalk to Terminal 1, increasing total annual capacity to approximately 7,040 passengers per hour. The project, led by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), includes new access roads and a perimeter security system.
Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), expressed satisfaction with the ongoing work.
