Malawi's Chawinga Celebrates Historic WAFCON Victory

Tabitha Chawinga, captain of the Malawi National Women's Football Team, declared their readiness to capitalize on their historic debut at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a remarkable 3-2 victory over defending champions Nigeria in Rabat. Chawinga, who scored one of the goals, noted that she and her sister, Temwa, had long awaited this opportunity.

She praised their teammates for their contributions to this significant upset. Despite being seen as underdogs, Chawinga stated that Malawi is targeting more than just participation, aiming for qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
