Malawi's Chawinga Sisters Propel Team to WAFCON Final

On Wednesday, Malawi's National Women's Football Team, led by the Chawinga sisters, secured a 3-1 victory over Algeria at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, advancing to the final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. This achievement makes Malawi the first debutants to reach the final since Zimbabwe in 2000.

The match, officiated by Nigerian referee Yemisi Akintoye, featured two first-half red cards. Algeria's Morgane Belkhiter was sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity to Malawi captain Tabitha Chawinga.

Tabitha scored the first goal with an overhead kick in the 33rd minute, followed by her sister Temwa doubling the lead in first-half stoppage time. Algeria's Ikram Adjabi scored after the break, but Tabitha sealed the win with her second goal.

Malawi's victory is notable as they have defeated established teams like Nigeria, Ghana, and Algeria, and Temwa Chawinga's performance has brought her total to four goals in the tournament.
