Three-way Battle for Super Eagles' Goalkeeper Position

A three-way competition for the Super Eagles' No. 1 goalkeeper position has intensified following Stanley Nwabali's current clubless status. Nwabali, who was previously established as the first-choice goalkeeper after an impressive run in the 2023-2025 Africa Cup of Nations, is now a free agent after terminating his contract with South African club Chippa United in February.

As he searches for a new club, head coach Eric Chell has named a squad for an international friendly against Iran on March 31, 2026, which includes goalkeepers Franci Uzoho from Omonia FC, Maduka Okoy from Udinese, and Adebayo Adeleye from Volo FC, but notably excludes Nwabali. Journalist Femi Fabunmi expressed confidence that Nwabali would return to the first-choice position if he secures a new club during the summer transfer window.

However, concerns remain about Nwabali's prolonged absence from club football potentially affecting his status with the national team.
