Tinubu Signs Electoral Act 2026 to Enhance Elections

On Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assented to the Electoral Act 2026, which amends the framework governing Nigeria's electoral process. The signing ceremony took place at the State House in Abuja, attended by key officials, including the Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Tinubu highlighted the importance of dialogue and national cohesion to strengthen democracy, asserting that the ultimate goal of electoral reform is to clarify and stabilize the electoral process. He emphasized that human oversight will be integral in announcing election results, addressing concerns about technological readiness for electronic transmission of results.

Tinubu reiterated that the electoral process should avoid confusion and disenfranchisement, ensuring that every vote counts. Akpabio described the amendments as tailored to Nigeria's unique circumstances, promoting transparency while accommodating infrastructural realities.

The law aims to enhance the integrity of the electoral process, allowing for real-time result transmission and additional scrutiny to deter tampering.
