Tinubu Expands Nigerian Army to 12 Divisions, Adds 28,000 Personnel

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to twelve divisions and the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel to strengthen national security and enhance the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces. This decision, announced on Thursday, aims to improve Nigeria’s security architecture, strengthen command structures, enhance border security, and boost military response to emerging threats.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, stated that this reflects Tinubu’s commitment to equipping the Armed Forces to address evolving security challenges.

The new structure will include divisions strategically located across the country, with new divisions established in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City. The implementation will occur in two phases: the first phase, covering the establishment of the 5, 9, and 10 Divisions, is set for completion by September 2026, while the second phase, involving the 83 Division, is expected to be completed by December 2026.

President Tinubu commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, for the Army's dedication and professionalism.
