Tinubu Approves N250bn for Student Hostels Nationwide

President Bola Tinubu has approved a N250 billion intervention fund aimed at constructing student hostels across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the inauguration of the governing board of the Federal Ministry of Education, disclosed this initiative on Wednesday in Abuja.

The fund is intended to tackle the persistent shortage of student accommodation in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. It is expected that at least 50 tertiary institutions will receive N2 billion each to provide a minimum of 500 bed spaces.

Additionally, N90 billion will be allocated through public-private partnership arrangements to develop hostels in 24 federal institutions, with capacities ranging from 1,200 to 1,500 bed spaces. The initiative is part of a broader educational reform agenda under Tinubu's administration, which includes a commitment to enhance human capital development.

The Ministry also noted that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) will provide N1 billion as counterpart funding, with private investors expected to contribute approximately N4 billion. Other funding interventions include N130 billion for engineering technology workshops and N120 billion for upgrading medical schools across the country.
