Tinubu Calls for Stronger Sanctions on Engineers, Contractors

President Bola Tinubu has advocated for tougher sanctions against engineers and contractors who fail to meet professional standards, during the 34th Engineering Assembly held in Abuja on Tuesday. He emphasized that the current regulatory framework is insufficient to ensure public safety and protect investments in infrastructure.

Tinubu's remarks were made through the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who stressed the importance of a data-driven enforcement regime to enhance public trust in engineering practices. The President noted that without effective regulations and sanctions, the risks associated with engineering failures could lead to loss of lives and damage to public confidence.

COREN President, Sadiq Abubakar, highlighted the need for intensified compliance monitoring and inspections across construction sites. He pointed out the challenges posed by unregistered practitioners and inadequate resources for enforcement.

Umahi added that weak enforcement has contributed to poor engineering practices, calling for reforms to empower COREN with stronger regulatory authority.
