Tinubu Urges Caution in Pension Fund Investments

President Bola Tinubu warned pension fund administrators and custodians against exposing workers' retirement savings to risky investments during the National Pension Conference and Awards at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. Represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, Tinubu stressed that the pursuit of higher returns must not compromise contributors' financial security.
He insisted that pension assets should be managed with transparency, accountability, and strict risk-management standards. The President highlighted that while pension savings could support national development, investment decisions must prioritize the interests of workers.
He noted that inflation was weakening retirement savings and urged operators to deliver sustainable returns without risking capital. Tinubu also directed employers to remit pension contributions promptly and called on PenCom to enforce regulations.
He announced that his administration had approved N738bn to address outstanding pension obligations and disclosed the commencement of the minimum pension guarantee. PenCom's Director-General, Omolola Oloworaran, reported an increase in Nigeria's pension assets from N20.79tn in July 2024 to N31.8tn in August 2026.
