Tinubu Advocates for Peace in South Sudan at AU Summit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has declared his support for the South Sudan peace process, specifically calling for the unconditional release of Riek Machar, the country's first vice president and a key opposition figure. This declaration was made during a meeting of the African Union (AU) high-level ad hoc committee on South Sudan, chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, held on the margins of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Tinubu urged the South Sudanese government to prioritize the immediate release of Machar and to engage in a constructive dialogue without preconditions. He highlighted the importance of national unity and the need for a transparent electoral process to build trust in the country's leadership.

The meeting also included discussions on the slow implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and the necessity for African leaders to work together to resolve the ongoing conflict in South Sudan.
