Tinubu Urges Release of South Sudan Leaders at Summit

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, has called for the immediate and unconditional release of South Sudan's First Vice President and other detained opposition figures. This demand was made during the C5 Plus summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on the sidelines of the 39th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Tinubu emphasized Nigeria's commitment to the swift implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and urged South Sudanese authorities to prioritize national reconciliation. He highlighted the importance of inclusivity in peace processes and credible elections, warning that political tensions and insecurity could hinder South Sudan's transitional process.

Ramaphosa praised the determination of African leaders to resolve conflicts and acknowledged the delays in implementing the revitalized peace agreement, which was adopted eight years ago. The summit included prominent figures such as Djibouti's President Ismail Omar Guelleh and Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, reaffirming the bloc's commitment to peace.
