Tinubu Faces EU Petition Over Alleged Certificate Forgery

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been petitioned before the European Union Commission in Brussels by Kalu Kalu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress and lawyer, over allegations of presenting forged academic certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 general election. Kalu claims that Tinubu did not provide details of his primary and secondary education in the documents submitted to INEC, raising concerns under Section 137 of the 1999 Constitution, which states that presenting false certificates disqualifies a candidate from running for office.

Kalu argues that Tinubu's actions undermine Nigeria's constitutional order and eligibility requirements for the presidency. This petition follows previous calls for investigations into Tinubu's academic and NYSC records, including a petition from the Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy on June 19, 2026.

The controversy has been reignited by documents from Chicago State University, which were released following a U.S. court order related to a case involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
