Taiwo Oyedele Clarifies: Tinubu Government Did Not Introduce 5% Fuel Surcharge

Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy Tax Reforms, clarified that the 5% fuel surcharge circulating in recent reports was not introduced by the Tinubu government. Oyedele explained that the surcharge was first enacted in 2007 but never implemented due to ongoing fuel subsidy.

Contrary to rumors, the surcharge was not part of the recent tax reform bill proposed by President Bola Tinubu. The surcharge, outlined in the 2007 law, mandates the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to collect 40% for federal roads and 60% for state roads.

Oyedele emphasized that the plan to implement the surcharge in January was a misunderstanding.
