Tinubu Rejects Fuel Subsidy Return Amid Kenya's Shift

President Bola Tinubu has firmly rejected any return to Nigeria's fuel subsidy regime, stating that calls for its restoration reflect a poor understanding of governance and economic management. He made this declaration during a meeting with Osun State Governor at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Tinubu argued that fuel subsidies had drained government finances, leaving many states unable to pay workers and pensioners. He advocated for redirecting funds previously allocated to subsidies towards infrastructure, housing, healthcare, and education.

This stance directly responds to a proposal by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who introduced the AERP 2027 economic recovery plan, suggesting a production subsidy for domestic refineries. Tinubu's administration warned that reinstating any form of subsidy without a clear legal and fiscal framework could further pressure the naira and reduce public spending.

Meanwhile, Kenya is exploring funding options to restore fuel subsidies withdrawn in 2022, driven by concerns over high retail fuel prices affecting households and businesses.
