Tinubu Celebrates Amuwo's 80th Birthday and Impact

On September 15, 2026, President Bola Tinubu commended Professor Shaffy Amuwo on the occasion of his 80th birthday for his significant contributions to health professions and humanitarian efforts in Africa. Tinubu noted that Amuwo's pioneering “Pipelines/Pathways to Health Professions” program has opened doors for thousands of minority students to pursue careers in health.

He highlighted Amuwo's facilitation of over $50 million in medical supplies and eyeglasses to various African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa. Tinubu acknowledged Amuwo's previous commendation by the United States Congress in 2004 and the establishment of a Minority Scholarship Fund in his name.

The President praised Amuwo's dedication to public health education and infrastructure, particularly during his tenure on the Governing Board of Lagos State University (LASU). Tinubu described Amuwo as a scholar, patriot, and friend, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to humanity and minority rights.
