Tinubu Kept Subsidy Removal Secret, Says Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed that President Bola Tinubu deliberately kept the decision to end the petrol subsidy a secret to prevent any persuasion against the move. This decision was intentionally excluded from Tinubu's inauguration speech.

Shettima made this disclosure during a high-profile courtesy visit to the Lagos State Governor, marking the Eid el-Kabir festival and the third anniversary of Tinubu's administration. He emphasized that the decision was not made impulsively but was a carefully considered choice, reflecting a courageous leadership approach.

Shettima argued that Tinubu inherited a compromised national structure that required significant reform and that confronting these challenges was essential for Nigeria's future. He described the administration's efforts as a difficult but necessary task to restructure the economy, stating that the removal of the subsidy was crucial to avoid imminent bankruptcy and to yield visible dividends for the citizens.
