Tinubu Launches World's First Media Literacy Institute

On Wednesday, October 25, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially launched the International Media Information Literacy Institute (IMILI) in Abuja, marking a significant step in addressing the global threat of misinformation and disinformation. The institute is the first of its kind recognized by UNESCO as a Category 2 center, dedicated solely to media information literacy.

During the launch, Tinubu emphasized the urgent need for a global response to the rapid spread of misinformation, which he described as a real and immediate danger. He traced the initiative's origins to Nigeria's hosting of the 10th Global Media Information Literacy Week in October 2022, where a commitment was made to establish a world-class institute.

The institute is set to collaborate with various sectors, including education and civil society, to enhance critical thinking skills and promote responsible information usage. The federal government has already allocated funding for the institute, which will integrate media literacy into Nigeria's educational system.
