FG Calls for Joint Action Against Disinformation in Media

On Monday, during the 2026 World Press Freedom Day event held at Radio House in Abuja, Nigeria's Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, urged for closer cooperation among media stakeholders to confront the rising challenges of disinformation and misinformation. He described these issues as growing threats to public trust and national cohesion.

Idris reaffirmed the government's commitment to press freedom, highlighting that it is guaranteed by the constitution and is a fundamental right. He noted that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has taken steps to improve open governance and expand public access to information.

The minister referenced Nigeria's collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote media literacy and empower citizens. He emphasized the need for journalists to adhere to ethical reporting standards and acknowledged the rapid growth of digital platforms that have intensified the spread of false information.

The event was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from the police and the Nigerian Press Council.
