Idris Advocates Collective Fight Against Fake News in Nigeria

On Thursday, during the 2026 World Press Freedom Day commemoration in Abuja, Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information, stated that the fight against fake news and hate speech is a collective responsibility involving journalists, government institutions, civil society groups, and citizens. He warned that while digital platforms enhance access to information, they also facilitate the rapid spread of falsehoods, posing risks to democracy and public trust.

Idris described journalism as a crucial pillar for truth and social stability, urging media professionals to go beyond mere reporting to foster understanding and promote national unity. He reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration to uphold democratic governance and media independence within professional boundaries.

Moritz Sprenker from Konrad Adenauer Stiftung highlighted journalism's role in shaping public debate and maintaining an open society. Dapo Olorunyomi, Chief Executive of the Centre for Journal Innovation and Development, stressed that press freedom is essential for democracy.
