Tinubu's Aide Clarifies Power Supply Comments

Bayo Onanuga, a presidential aide to President Bola Tinubu, dismissed claims that Tinubu suggested Nigerians should reject him in the upcoming elections due to failures in electricity supply. Onanuga explained that Tinubu's remarks made during a business luncheon in December 2022 were taken out of context.

He clarified that the President's statement was not a pledge to forgo a second term but rather an acknowledgment of the challenges in the power sector. Onanuga noted that Nigeria has an installed generation capacity of 13,500 megawatts but faces significant constraints due to legacy debts and inadequate infrastructure.

He highlighted that the Tinubu administration is committed to reforming the power sector, addressing issues such as estimated billing, and ensuring that Nigerians receive meters free of charge. Onanuga reaffirmed the government's dedication to improving electricity supply and strengthening the nation's power sector despite ongoing challenges.
