Danjuma, aged 87, served as Defence Minister during the first term of former President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2003. He is a prominent figure in Nigeria's military and political landscape, having previously held the position of Chief of Army Staff from 1976 to 1979 under the military government of General Olusegun Obasanjo.

Danjuma played a pivotal role in Nigeria's political history, notably during the July 1966 counter-coup that brought General Yakubu Gowon to power. Beyond his military career, he is a billionaire businessman with interests in the oil and gas sector through his company, South Atlantic Petroleum, and is recognized for his philanthropic activities through the TY Danjuma Foundation.
