Tinubu Rules Out Fuel Subsidy Return, Sets October Target for Lower Transport Fares

President Bola Tinubu has definitively shut the door on reinstating Nigeria's fuel subsidy system, instead pivoting the nation toward compressed natural gas infrastructure to address transportation affordability. Speaking on Saturday, Tinubu stated that Nigeria's current economic position makes a return to subsidies untenable, given the historical drain such programmes imposed on public finances and the country's vulnerability to global oil price fluctuations.

The President has directed all 36 state governments to ensure that the cost savings from compressed natural gas-powered vehicles translate into reduced fares for commuters beginning October 1. This October deadline represents a concrete benchmark for measuring the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme's effectiveness across the country.

The initiative emerged from Tinubu's August 27 meeting with state governors and involves collaboration among the Federal Government, state administrations, transport unions, and commercial operators. According to Tinubu's statement issued Saturday, the Federal Government will provide support to states in three key areas: expanding CNG infrastructure, converting existing vehicles to run on the fuel, and developing public transport fleets powered by compressed natural gas.

State governors have been encouraged to work directly with transport unions and commercial operators to ensure the affordability benefits reach ordinary Nigerians using public transportation. Tinubu characterized the subsidy regime as economically destructive, noting it depleted resources and left Nigeria exposed to international energy market volatility.

The compressed natural gas approach represents the administration's preferred alternative to addressing transport costs without returning to the previous subsidy model. Implementation across states is expected to produce measurable fare reductions by the October 1 target date.
