Tinubu Launches CNG Transport Initiative to Cut Fares

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed states to accelerate the implementation of the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme, with the goal of enabling more Nigerians to experience reduced transportation costs starting October 1. This directive follows a meeting on August 27 with governors from the 36 states, where they agreed on the need for cheaper energy alternatives to lower transport costs.

An implementation committee has been formed under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, chaired by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. The committee, alongside state governments and stakeholders, is tasked with identifying priority transport corridors and necessary interventions.

Tinubu emphasized the urgency of the program due to the global energy crisis, highlighting successful initiatives in states like Borno, Kaduna, and Oyo, where CNG-powered transport has significantly lowered fares. For instance, in Borno, fares dropped from ₦300-₦600 to ₦50-₦100, and in Kaduna, 100 CNG buses saved commuters over ₦3.5 billion in their first year.
