Tinubu to Launch $3.5bn Bakassi Deep Seaport Project

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to perform the groundbreaking ceremony for the Bakassi Deep Seaport in Cross River State, as announced by the state government. This event signifies a major milestone in the $3.5 billion project, which received approval from the Federal Executive Council in December 2025.

Pastor Ekpenyong Cobham, the Commissioner for Information, stated that the project has progressed beyond years of conceptualization, with Governor Bassey Otu's administration completing essential technical studies and obtaining federal support. The groundbreaking arrangements are currently being rescheduled at the federal level.

The Bakassi Deep Seaport is a public-private partnership initiative aimed at enhancing Nigeria's maritime capacity and attracting private investments. It will also integrate with broader transport infrastructure, including the proposed Calabar-Ogoja-Gakem superhighway.

Cobham emphasized that the current administration has taken concrete steps to actualize the project, which had previously remained in the planning phase.
