Tinubu’s Drug Price Executive Order Fails to Ease Cost Burden on Nigerians

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's executive order to lower drug prices in Nigeria has not alleviated the cost burden on citizens, as prices of essential medicines continue to rise since its introduction on June 30, 2024. The order, which aimed to boost local manufacturing by providing zero tariffs and excise duties on specified machinery, equipment, and raw materials, has not translated into reduced retail prices.

Despite the government's approval of a centralized procurement platform called Medipool to deliver competitive pricing, recent market surveys show significant price increases in essential drugs like insulin, glucometers, hypertension medications, and malaria treatments. This surge in prices raises concerns about the implementation and supply chain pressures in Nigeria's pharmaceutical sector, which heavily relies on imported drugs despite efforts to promote local production.
