Nigeria and UK Sign Deportation Agreement for Asylum Seekers

The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has entered into an agreement with the United Kingdom to assist in the deportation of Nigerian nationals who have failed to secure asylum in the UK. This agreement was announced by the UK Home Office on Thursday, following President Tinubu's visit to the UK earlier in the week.

According to reports, there are currently 961 Nigerian asylum seekers in the UK whose appeals have been rejected, indicating that they do not qualify for refugee status. The agreement is expected to streamline the process of returning these individuals to Nigeria, particularly those who have committed offenses.

The UK Home Office is reportedly waiting to send back 1,110 Nigerian nationals, and this new accord will facilitate their deportation, as it allows for the return of individuals who have overstayed their visas.
