UK Signs Deal to Deport Over 2,000 Nigerians

During President Bola Tinubu's recent visit to the United Kingdom, a new migration deal was signed, allowing the UK to deport over 2,000 Nigerians who currently have no legal right to remain in the country. The agreement, formalized by Nigeria's Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji Ojo and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, is expected to fast-track the return of failed asylum seekers, visa overstayers, and convicted offenders back to Nigeria.

UK officials indicate that 961 Nigerians have already completed their asylum appeal process, with an additional 1,100 offenders currently in line for deportation. A significant change introduced in the deal is Nigeria's acceptance of a UK letter as a valid identification document for deportation, serving as a substitute for a passport in cases where individuals lack proper travel documents.

The agreement also aims to tackle organized immigration crime, with both countries committing to share intelligence and coordinate operations against visa fraud and other illegal activities.
