UK and Nigeria Sign Major Deportation Agreement

The United Kingdom and Nigeria have formalized a deportation agreement aimed at returning thousands of Nigerians who lack legal rights to remain in the UK. This includes failed asylum seekers and individuals who have overstayed their visas.

The agreement was signed by Nigeria's Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood during a state visit by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. The UK Home Office announced that the deal will facilitate the return of individuals by removing bureaucratic obstacles, allowing Nigeria to accept UK letters as identification for those without valid passports.

The arrangement is expected to significantly accelerate the deportation process, with data indicating that 961 Nigerians have exhausted their asylum appeals and an additional 1,110 await deportation. The agreement also includes plans for joint operations and intelligence sharing to combat organized immigration crime, such as visa fraud and sham marriages.

The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
