Tinubu Launches CNG Program to Cut Transport Costs

On September 19, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu provided an update on the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme, announcing that Nigerians should anticipate measurable reductions in transportation costs beginning October 1. He instructed state governments to ensure that savings from cheaper energy sources are passed on to commuters through lower fares.

This initiative aims to address Nigeria's transportation crisis, which is closely linked to the country's energy challenges. The CNG strategy seeks to reduce reliance on petrol and diesel by promoting the use of natural gas, a resource Nigeria has in abundance.

Over the past three years, more than 120,000 vehicles have been converted to CNG, with over 400 certified conversion centers and more than 90 CNG refueling stations established. Tinubu emphasized that the transportation system should be built on a cheaper domestic energy source to provide sustainable relief from high transport costs.
