Yelwata Massacre Trial Adjourned to March 9, 2024

The trial of nine individuals accused of orchestrating the Yelwata massacre, which occurred on June 13, 2025, has been adjourned until March 9, 2024, by Justice Joyc Abdulmalik at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The adjournment was prompted by a request from defense counsel, who stated they needed more time to familiarize themselves with the 57-count amended terror charges filed by the Federal Government, led by Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi.

The defendants, including Ardo Lawal, Moham Dono, and others, are accused of planning assaults, recruiting fighters, and providing logistical support for the attacks that reportedly resulted in the deaths of 150 individuals and the destruction of property. The defense expressed difficulties in proceeding without having reviewed the charges, while the prosecution, represented by Rotimi Oyedepo, did not oppose the adjournment but suggested that evidence from chief prosecution witnesses be deferred until the next date.

The case is of significant public interest, and the judge emphasized the need to avoid unnecessary delays.
