Nigerian Army Deploys Troops to Ebonyi State Amidst Communal Tensions

The Nigerian Army clarified its ongoing security operation in the troubled Amasiri community of Ebonyi State to protect residents and combat criminal elements. Troops were deployed following the discovery of a shallow grave containing mutilated bodies in Okporojo village, Edda Local Government Area.

The operation involves a joint team comprising the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police, and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps conducting intelligence-led patrols and search operations. The deployment is not targeted at the people of Amasiri but at criminal elements exploiting communal tensions to perpetrate heinous crimes.

The unrest stems from a longstanding land dispute between Amasiri and neighboring communities, particularly Edda, escalating after a deadly attack on Okporojo village. Governor Francis Nwifuru imposed a curfew and dissolved the community's leadership structure to restore peace, leading to protests from Amasiri residents who perceive bias in favor of Edda.

The Army emphasizes its commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring justice while urging the public to support ongoing security efforts.
