Trump Announces Three-Day Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire

On May 9, 2023, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, set to run from May 9 to May 11.

Trump expressed hope that this ceasefire could pave the way for a lasting peace agreement. The ceasefire follows an earlier unilateral truce announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin, coinciding with Russia's May 9 Victory Day celebrations, which mark the end of World War II.

Trump disclosed this information on his Truth Social platform, stating that both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi agreed to the temporary halt in fighting. The truce will involve the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from both sides.

However, despite the announcement, fighting reportedly continued on Friday, with both Russia and Ukraine accusing each other of ongoing attacks. Ukrainian President Zelenskyi stated that Russian forces did not reduce their assault operations despite the ceasefire declaration, while Russia claimed to have intercepted 400 Ukrainian drones, including 100 targeting Moscow.
