Trump Backs Infantino Amid FIFA Leadership Controversy

On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed that replacing FIFA President Gianni Infantino would be a "terrible mistake." Infantino, who has faced scrutiny for attempting to sell part of the World Cup to private investors, received support from Trump, who praised him as "fantastic" and noted his success in overseeing the most profitable World Cup.

Infantino has been criticized in an open letter from UEFA, CONCACAF, and AFC for breaking trust through deception. Despite this, he has the backing of the Confederation of African Football and some support from CONCACAF members like Mexico.

Infantino's plans for private investment in FIFA competitions were withdrawn after UEFA threatened to boycott World Cups. He is set for re-election for a fourth term at the FIFA Congress in March 2027, with candidates needing to be declared by November 18.

Victor Montagliani, the CONCACAF president, is seen as a potential challenger.
