Trump Threatens Iran Amid Resumed US-Iran Talks

President Donald Trump threatened to "annihilate" Iran during a speech at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He stated he faced a decision between allowing Iran to rebuild or taking military action against the Islamic Republic.

Trump revealed that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, for about three hours, describing the discussions as productive. He indicated that there was growing momentum towards an agreement, with indications that Iran was willing to negotiate.

The meeting was the first face-to-face engagement between senior US and Iranian officials since Vice President JD Vance's meeting with Iranian representatives in Switzerland in June. Iranian state media reported that Araghchi presented conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, including the lifting of the US naval blockade and the release of frozen Iranian assets.

Trump also expressed expectations for an agreement after the November midterm elections.
