TUC Pickets Abuja Continental Hotel Over Labor Rights Violations

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) conducted a picketing at the Abuja Continental Hotel, protesting alleged anti-labor practices and violations of workers' rights. TUC Secretary-General Nuhu Toro indicated that the union had attempted to resolve the issue through dialogue after contacting management on August 4, but received an unacceptable response stating that ongoing renovations would delay discussions until the end of November.

Toro emphasized that workers were being treated poorly and denied their rights to unionization and collective bargaining, as protected under Section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution. The picketing, which lasted for about two hours and blocked vehicular movement, was supported by William Adegbe, National President of the Hotel and Personal Services Senior Staff Association (HAFSA), who noted similar disputes had occurred at the Continental Hotel in Lagos.

Adegbe claimed that workers were intimidated during the protest and that previous attempts to engage management had been ignored.
