EFCC Recovers Over N1.2 Trillion in Anti-Corruption Efforts
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), under the leadership of Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa, is expanding its role in Nigeria's anti-corruption efforts beyond traditional law enforcement. Between October 2023 and June 2026, the EFCC received 49,673 petitions, investigated 39,615 cases, filed 14,476 cases in court, and secured 10,872 convictions, achieving a conviction-to-filing ratio of 75.1 percent.
The commission recovered N1.233 trillion, $684.48 million, £373,905, and €9.34 million during this period. Of the naira recoveries, N397.26 billion went directly to the federal government, while N836.34 billion was returned to various ministries, departments, agencies, and individuals.
The EFCC also recovered approximately N288.1 billion in federal and state tax obligations. Bawa emphasized that recovery is meaningful when value is returned to the public interest and rightful beneficiaries, illustrating the intersection of anti-corruption enforcement and economic policy.
