Two Arrested in Ondo for Maternal and Infant Deaths

The Ondo State Police Command arrested two women, Elizabeth Aremu and Bless Effiong, for allegedly posing as midwives linked to the deaths of mothers and their newborns during childbirth. The incidents occurred in separate health facilities within Ondo State, specifically in Akure and Emure, over the course of a month.

The first incident was reported on April 16, 2026, when Mr. Bawa Lawal informed the police about the death of his wife, Bless, who had complications during labor at a private residence in the Gloryland area off Ado Road, Akure.

Following an investigation, police discovered the lifeless bodies of both the mother and her newborn wrapped in a sack at the scene. This prompted the police to take immediate action, leading to the suspects' arrests.
