Police Arrest Two Women Over Maternal Deaths in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command arrested two women, Elizabeth Aremu and Bless Effiong, over the deaths of mothers and their newborns under suspicious circumstances. The incidents occurred in Akure, specifically in the Emure Il and Owo Local Government Area, within a month.

The first incident was reported on April 16, 2026, when Mr. Bawa Lawal informed the police about the death of his wife, Bless, who had gone into labor at their private residence in the Gloryland area off Ado Road, Akure.

Elizabeth Aremu allegedly presented herself as a midwife during the delivery, which developed complications. Following the investigation, police discovered the lifeless body of the newborn wrapped in a sack, prompting the immediate arrest of the suspects.
