Two Nigerians Killed in Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa

Two Nigerians, Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew, were killed in recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which have sparked fear among the Nigerian diaspora and prompted urgent diplomatic intervention from the Nigerian government. The Nigerian Consul General in Johannesburg, Ninikanwa Okei Uche, confirmed the deaths, stating that Emmanuel sustained injuries after being beaten by personnel from the South African National Defence Force on April 20, while Andrew was apprehended on April 19 in Pretoria following an altercation with members of the Tshwane Metro Police.

His body was later discovered in a mortuary. The incidents have left the Nigerian community in shock, leading to the opening of a formal case with the South African Police Service.

Uche urged for an independent police investigation to ensure transparency. The Nigerian government has been called upon to protect its citizens abroad, emphasizing its constitutional moral responsibility.

Amid rising tensions, Uche warned Nigerians to remain calm and law-abiding.
