Lagos officials have marked the opening of a refurbished facility serving girls whose schooling was interrupted. Located in Agboju, within Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, the Alternative High School for Girls underwent formal inauguration last weekend to create educational re-entry pathways for young women experiencing socioeconomic hardship.
Leadership at the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) stressed that circumstances should never bar any child from accessing quality education. During the commissioning event, UBEC officials asserted that all Nigerian children merit opportunities to learn, cultivate their capabilities and realise what they can become.
The institution was first created in 2007 when President Bola Tinubu held the position of Lagos Governor. The upgraded campus comprises instructional blocks containing over 26 classrooms plus laboratories dedicated to agriculture, physics and biology studies.
Vocational instruction encompasses cosmetology, garment manufacturing, hairdressing, catering and home economics courses. The site features equipped library and ICT infrastructure as well.
Girls experiencing interrupted schooling—particularly from early pregnancy and other hardships—can attend, finish secondary programmes and gain marketable competencies. Representing First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the Vice President's spouse Hajiya Nana Shettima addressed the inauguration gathering, reinforcing commitment to supporting educationally disrupted girls in reaching their possibilities.
UBEC outlined this Lagos undertaking as part of wider strategy to boost fundamental and secondary education availability nationwide, signalling intentions to establish comparable institutions elsewhere throughout the state.
