UEFA and Concacaf Plan Combined Nations League by 2028

UEFA and Concacaf have initiated talks regarding a combined Nations League that would involve all 96 teams from Europe and North, Central America, and the Caribbean. This innovative competition could commence as early as 2028, allowing prominent European teams such as Spain, France, England, and Germany to compete against North American teams like Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The proposed structure includes multiple tiers, similar to existing leagues run by UEFA and Concacaf, with group phases scheduled for September, October, and November, followed by knockout rounds in March and a final-four event in June. This new competition is designed to replace many current international matches, thereby alleviating calendar congestion.

Matches will be organized in geographical clusters to reduce travel. The initiative is expected to generate revenue growth for smaller nations and facilitate high-profile European matches on North American soil.

Discussions are ongoing amid rising pressure on FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding his plans to partner with private investment firms.
