UK Appoints Peter Vowles as High Commissioner to Nigeria

The United Kingdom has appointed Peter Vowles as the new High Commissioner to Nigeria, succeeding Richard Montgomery. This announcement was made in a statement yesterday, with Vowles expected to assume his duties in Abuja in September 2026.

Richard Montgomery will remain in office until the end of the transition. Vowles brings over a decade of diplomatic and international development experience to the position, having recently served as the UK Ambassador to Zimbabwe from 2023 to 2026 and previously as Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022.

His career includes several senior leadership roles within the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and its predecessor, the Department for International Development (DFID). Vowles has extensive field experience in international development across South Asia and Central and East Africa, with previous assignments in Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya.

He expressed honor in his appointment, emphasizing the importance of Nigeria to the UK and his eagerness to work closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen bilateral relations in trade, development, and security.
