UK Home Office Announces New 10-Year Residency Visa Routes

The UK Home Office has published a consultation document detailing more than 30 visa routes that qualify migrants for permanent residency, also known as indefinite leave to remain (ILR), under a reformed settlement framework. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood presented this document to Parliament.

The number of immigration routes leading to settlement has been narrowed from nearly 70 to approximately 40, with the standard qualifying period extended from 5 years to 10 years. The visa routes are categorized into Work, Family, Protection, and Other.

Under the Work category, various visas such as the Skilled Worker visa and Global Talent route are included, with some requiring shorter residency periods. Applicants must demonstrate a clean criminal record, a high standard of English, sustained economic contributions, and no outstanding debt in the UK.

The Home Office forecasts that around 1.6 million individuals will receive settlement grants between 2026 and 2030, with a peak of about 450,000 expected in 2028. Existing settled status holders will not be affected by these changes.
